Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia accounting for up to 60% of dementia diagnoses (source). Other types of dementia include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia (source).
Dementia is commonly associated with the elderly but early-onset dementia can start as early as the 30s and accounts for approximately 5% of cases (source).
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurologic condition that causes the brain to shrink and brain cells to die. It is thought to be caused by an abnormal build-up of proteins called amyloid and tau, in and around the brain cells.
This results in a continuous decline in thinking, behavioural and social skills that affect a person’s ability to function independently (source).
Whilst some medications may temporarily improve or slow the progression of symptoms, there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease and therefore care is focused on helping people maintain maximum function and independence (source).
The progression of the disease means that skills such as reading, long-term memory recall, singing or telling stories are preserved long after other abilities have been lost. The Memory Lane Games app uses these skills and helps people living with Alzheimer’s and their carers.
